One of the most common questions we receive when building a new concrete swimming pool is: how long does the concrete pool need to cure?


As a general guide, a concrete pool shell needs approximately 28 days to reach its expected design strength. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean your entire pool project comes to a standstill for four weeks. Some stages of the build may continue during the curing period, depending on the pool design, weather conditions, engineering requirements and the materials being installed.


It is also important to understand the difference between the initial curing period, the concrete reaching its expected strength and the finished pool being ready to fill with water. These are related stages, but they are not the same thing.


After building several custom concrete pools across the Gold Coast, we know that allowing sufficient curing time is essential. Rushing this stage may affect the strength, waterproofing and long-term performance of the pool. In this guide, we explain how concrete curing works, why it matters and what Gold Coast homeowners can expect during the process.


What Does It Mean When Concrete Cures?

Concrete curing is the process that allows freshly placed concrete to harden and develop strength.


Concrete is created using a mixture that includes cement, water and aggregates. When cement and water react, a chemical process known as hydration begins. This reaction binds the materials together and gradually transforms the concrete from a workable mixture into a strong, solid structure.


Concrete does not simply “dry out.” In fact, losing moisture too quickly can interfere with the curing process. The concrete needs suitable moisture and temperature conditions during its early stages so hydration can continue properly.


This is why professional curing methods are used after the concrete pool shell has been formed. The aim is to control moisture loss and help the shell develop the durability and structural strength required for long-term use.


How Long Does A Concrete Pool Shell Take To Cure?

A concrete pool shell generally requires around 28 days to reach its expected design strength. However, concrete begins developing strength much sooner than this.


A simplified curing timeline may look like this:

  • First 24 to 48 hours: The concrete begins setting and is particularly vulnerable to rapid moisture loss and interference.
  • First seven days: This is one of the most important periods for moisture control and strength development.
  • Seven to 14 days: The shell continues gaining strength, although it has not yet reached its expected 28-day strength.
  • Around 28 days: The concrete will generally have reached its specified design strength under suitable conditions.
  • Beyond 28 days: Concrete may continue becoming stronger over a much longer period.


The exact timeframe can be influenced by the concrete mix, shell thickness, application method, weather, engineering specifications and curing procedures.


For this reason, 28 days should be treated as a general industry benchmark rather than a guarantee that every pool will be ready for every finishing stage on exactly the same day.


Why Is The 28-Day Curing Period Important?

The 28-day curing period gives the concrete time to develop the strength and stability needed to support the pool structure and its finishes.


A concrete swimming pool must withstand significant and ongoing pressure. Once filled, thousands of litres of water push against the pool floor and walls. The shell must also cope with ground movement, changing temperatures and the surrounding soil conditions.


Allowing the concrete to cure properly can help:

  • Develop the required structural strength
  • Reduce the risk of excessive shrinkage cracking
  • Improve the durability of the pool shell
  • Create a more stable base for waterproofing and interior finishes

The surface may need to be kept damp during the early curing period to prevent it from losing water too quickly. In some circumstances, the shell may be watered several times as part of the curing process.


The pool builder will determine the appropriate approach based on the concrete specifications and conditions at the property. Homeowners should follow the instructions they are given rather than independently watering the shell or assuming that more water will always produce a better result.

  • Equipment installation
  • Coping preparation
  • Surrounding landscaping
  • Retaining structures
  • Pool fencing preparation
  • Decking or paving preparation
  • Planning for the interior finish


However, the schedule will vary between projects. Certain products and finishes cannot be applied until the shell has cured sufficiently and moisture conditions are appropriate.


A professionally managed build sequences these activities carefully. The goal is to use the construction period efficiently without placing the pool shell or finished result at risk.


This is one reason a concrete pool build takes longer than simply excavating the yard and spraying the shell. Each stage must be completed in the correct order, with appropriate time allowed for curing, preparation, inspections and finishing.


Can Pool Tiles Be Installed Before 28 Days?

Whether tiling can begin before the full 28-day period depends on the area being tiled, the installation system, the condition of the concrete and the requirements of the products being used.


Concrete experiences movement and shrinkage as it cures. Installing tiles or other rigid finishes too soon may increase the risk of adhesion problems, cracking or movement being transferred through the finished surface.


The installer must consider:

  • How long the shell has been curing
  • The moisture content of the substrate
  • The type of tile or stone being installed
  • Adhesive and membrane requirements
  • Manufacturer specifications
  • Expansion and movement joints
  • Weather conditions
  • The location of the tiles


The correct installation timeframe should be determined by the builder and relevant product specifications. Rushing tiling simply to shorten the overall build could create much more expensive problems later.


When Is Waterproofing Applied?

Waterproofing is another stage that must be coordinated with the curing of the concrete shell.


Before a waterproofing system is installed, the surface needs to be properly prepared and sufficiently stable. Dust, loose material, sharp edges, irregularities and other surface issues may need to be addressed first.


Different waterproofing products have their own requirements relating to:

  • Concrete age
  • Surface moisture
  • Temperature
  • Surface preparation
  • Application thickness
  • Drying or curing time
  • Compatibility with adhesives and finishes


The waterproofing system itself also needs time to cure before the next stage begins. Applying a finish over waterproofing too soon can affect adhesion and performance.

When Can A New Concrete Pool Be Filled With Water?

A new concrete pool should only be filled once the shell, waterproofing and interior finish have been completed and the builder confirms it is ready.


The filling process is especially important after the interior pool finish has been applied. Some finishes need water to be added promptly and continuously to cure correctly and avoid marks, discolouration or uneven results.


Once filling begins, it generally should not be stopped partway unless the builder or finish manufacturer instructs otherwise. Pausing the water at the same level for an extended period can sometimes leave a visible line on a new surface.


After the pool is full, the water also needs to be correctly balanced. The filtration system must be commissioned, and the new interior finish may require a specific start-up procedure. This may involve brushing the surface and carefully managing the pool chemistry during the first days or weeks.


Homeowners should avoid adding chemicals, switching on equipment or swimming until they have received the appropriate handover instructions.


When Can You Swim In A New Concrete Pool?

You can usually swim once the pool has been completely filled, the filtration system is operating and the water chemistry has been safely balanced. However, the precise waiting period depends on the interior finish, sanitisation system and start-up process.


A newly finished pool may initially require:

  • Continuous filtration
  • Regular brushing
  • Water testing and adjustment

How Gold Coast Conditions Affect Concrete Pool Curing

Concrete pools on the Gold Coast are built in a subtropical climate characterised by warm temperatures, strong sunlight, high humidity and periods of heavy rain. These local conditions must be considered when planning and curing a pool shell.


Hot Weather And Direct Sunlight

High temperatures and direct sunlight can cause moisture to evaporate rapidly from fresh concrete. If the surface loses moisture too quickly, it may increase the risk of plastic shrinkage cracking and interfere with proper strength development.

  7. Waterproofing and tiling
  8. Coping and pool surrounds
  9. Interior finishing
  10. Equipment installation and commissioning
  11. Filling, water balancing and handover


Complex designs, difficult access, retaining walls, extensive landscaping and bad weather may increase the timeframe. Your builder should provide a realistic schedule and keep you informed as the work progresses.


How Long Should You Allow A Concrete Pool To Cure?
